Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782-

Removing
  Note
All cable ties which are released or cut open when removing must be refitted in the same position when installing.
–  Pull off engine cover panel (rear) -arrows-.
  A10-1515
–  Pull non-return valve -1- off connection at air intake hose.
–  Remove air intake hose. To do so, release hose clip -2- and clamps -arrows-.

–  Unplug electrical connector -2- for Lambda probe after catalytic converter -G130- and move wiring clear (downwards).
  Note
Disregard -item 1-.

–  Unscrew nut -2- (accessible from above) connecting front exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold.

Shown from rear with engine removed for illustration purposes.
–  Remove front right wheel.

–  Vehicles with auxiliary heater: remove bolts -arrows- securing exhaust pipe for auxiliary/additional heater to noise insulation.

–  Open quick-release fasteners -1 … 3- and take off front and rear noise insulation.

–  Unscrew bolts -1 … 4- and remove front cross-piece.

To avoid any damage, the flexible joint in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10°.
–  Loosen both clamps on exhaust system -arrows- and disconnect exhaust pipes.

–  Position lifting column of engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- underneath cross member (rear) with a piece of wood -1- placed in between.

–  First unscrew bolts -1- and -2-, then bolts -3- and -4-.
–  Carefully lower rear tunnel cross member using engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-.
–  Re-position engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-.

–  Unscrew nuts -arrows- and remove rear tunnel cross member.

–  Unbolt heat shield -1- for drive shaft (right-side).
–  Remove drive shaft (right-side) → Rep. Gr.40.

–  Unbolt mounting plate for front exhaust pipe -arrows-.
  A26-0564
–  Remove bracket -arrow- for ATF pipes.
  Note
  A37-0500
Observe rules for cleanliness when working on automatic gearbox → Rep. Gr.00.
–  Place used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- under connection.
–  Unscrew bolt -arrow- and detach ATF pipes from gearbox.
–  Tie ATF pipes to one side.

–  Remove nuts -1- and -3- (accessible from below) securing front exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold.

–  Unscrew nuts (bottom) -1- at engine mountings (right and left) several turns.
–  Press gearbox to the left.
–  Remove front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:
  Note
t  Renew gaskets and self-locking nuts.
t  Fit all cable ties in the original positions when installing.
t  When installing, the Lambda probe wires must always be reattached at the same locations to prevent them from coming into contact with the exhaust pipe.
–  Secure ATF lines → Rep. Gr.37.
–  Install subframe → Rep. Gr.40.
–  Install drive shaft → Rep. Gr.40.
–  Align engine so it is free of stress.
–  Align exhaust system so it is free of stress → Chapter.

–  Check ATF level → Rep. Gr.37.
