Removing and installing oil pump Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782-

t  Long-nose grip pliers -VAS 6226-

Removing –  Remove sump (bottom section) → Chapter. –  Detach coolant hoses -1- and -2-. –  Unbolt coolant pump -arrows-.

–  Remove drive shaft -arrow- for coolant pump from the oil pump.

–  Pull both side plates off baffle box -arrows-.

–  Position used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- below engine. –  Unscrew bolts -arrows- and remove oil pipe.   Note Some oil will come out when oil pipe is removed.

–  Unscrew bolts -arrows- and remove intake connecting pipe with housing.

–  Remove oil pipe together with oil retention valve housing.   Note Some oil will come out when oil pipe is removed.

–  Unscrew bolt -arrow- and remove baffle box.

–  Press oil pump drive shaft -1- back against spring pressure and hold firmly with long-nose grip pliers -VAS 6226-.

–  Unscrew bolts -arrows- and remove oil pump. Installing   Note Renew seals and O-rings. –  Check whether the two dowel sleeves are fitted in the cylinder block; install if necessary. –  Secure the oil pump -arrows-.

–  Release long-nose grip pliers -VAS 6226- and let drive shaft -1- slide into oil pump.

–  Check to ensure that the drive shaft is positively engaged in the oil pump. Try to turn the oil pump gears by reaching into the opening in the intake pipe -arrow- of oil pump. l  You should not be able to turn the gears. Remaining installation steps are carried out in reverse sequence; note the following: –  Install coolant pump → Chapter. –  Install sump (bottom section) → Anchor. –  Fill up with engine oil and check oil level → Booklet803 or → Booklet805. –  Fill cooling system → Anchor. Tightening torques
