Checking fuel gauge senderG
Checking fuel gauge sender -G-
Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Hand-held multimeter -V.A.G 1526C-
  W00-10311
t  Auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594C-
  W00-10008
Test sequence
–  Remove rear seat bench → Rep. Gr.72.
–  Unscrew cover for flange (right-side) -arrows-.
  A20-0803
–  Unplug electrical connector -arrow- at flange (right side of vehicle).
  A20-0802
Vehicles up to 06.2001
–  Connect hand-held multimeter -V.A.G 1526C- to measure resistance between contacts -2- and -3-.
  A20-0820
Sender installedSender at lower stopSender at upper stop
Fuel gauge sender -G-approx. 65 Ωapprox. 280 Ω

  Note
t  If the resistance is 0 Ω, there is a short circuit. If the resistance is ∞ Ω, there is an open circuit in the wiring.
t  In order to test the maximum and minimum resistance values for “tank full” and “tank empty”, remove the fuel gauge sender -G- → Chapter and move the float all the way to its top or bottom position.
t  The following values are obtained with the fuel gauge sender -G- removed, due to the greater travel of the float arm:

Sender removedSender at lower stopSender at upper stop
Fuel gauge sender -G-approx. 51 Ωapprox. 294 Ω

Vehicles from 06.2001 onwards
–  Connect hand-held multimeter -V.A.G 1526C- to measure resistance between contacts -2- and -3-.
  A20-0820
Sender installedSender at lower stopSender at upper stop
Fuel gauge sender -G-295 … 305 Ω56 … 68 Ω

  Note
t  If the resistance is 0 Ω, there is a short circuit. If the resistance is ∞ Ω, there is an open circuit in the wiring.
