Wiring and component check using test box V.A.G 1598/39

Notes:

  • ◆ The test box has 105 pins. The connecting cable can be disconnected from the test box. This means that only the cable (and not the test box) has to be purchased for future engine control units with different connector variants.
  • ◆ The smaller of the two connectors on the engine control unit is labelled "A" (contacts 1 to 60). The larger of the two contacts is labelled "K" (contacts 1 to 94).
  • ◆ If you want to check a wiring connection to the engine control unit, first refer to the current flow diagram to find out which connector on the engine control unit the wiring connection leads to. If this is a wire which leads to connector "A", e.g. the actuation wire for the intake manifold changeover valve (A6), then connect the smaller of the two connectors and measure at Pin 6 of the test box. The remaining pins on the test box (all pins greater than 60) can be ignored for connector "A".
  • ◆ If a wire leads to connector "K", the larger of the two connectors of the engine wiring harness must be connected to the test box. Measurements are then taken at the respective pin of the test box (in the way described above). All pins which are greater then 94 on the test box can be ignored.
  • ◆ The test box V.A.G 1598/39 is designed for simultaneous connection to the engine control unit wiring harness and the actual engine control unit.
  • ◆ This has the advantage that the electronic engine management system remains fully operational with the test box connected (e.g. measurement of signals with engine running).
  • ◆ Whether or not the engine control unit is additionally to be connected to the test box is indicated in the appropriate test sequences.
Attention:
So as not to destroy electronic components, select required measuring range before connecting test leads and observe test conditions.

Remove engine control unit .

  • ‒ Connect test box V.A.G 1598/39 to wiring harness connector. Connect earth clip on test box to battery negative terminal. Whether or not the engine control unit is additionally to be connected to the test box is indicated in the appropriate test sequences.
  • ‒ Perform testing as described in appropriate repair operations.

Perform the following after reconnecting engine control unit:

  • ‒ Interrogate and if necessary erase fault memory.
