Removing and installing hub carrier/wheel bearing housing (steel)
   
Removing and installing hub carrier/wheel bearing housing (steel)
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Hub grease cap puller -VW 637/2-
t  Fitting sleeve -3241/4-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1410-
t  Socket -T40027-

Removing
–  Remove wheel trim; on light-alloy wheels, pull off trim cap (use puller in vehicle tool kit).
   
Vehicles with front-wheel drive
  Note
If wheel bearing unit is not being renewed, do not remove flange bolt and grease cap.
–  Remove wheel.
–  Tap gently to detach grease cap from its seat.

–  Pry off grease cap.
–  Fit wheel and lower vehicle onto its wheels.

All vehicles (continued):
–  Loosen the flange bolt -arrow- only 90°, otherwise the wheel bearing will be damaged.
  WARNING
The vehicle must be standing on its wheels when loosening and tightening the flange bolt.
-Accident risk-
–  Remove wheel.
–  Secure brake disc with one wheel bolt.

–  Unbolt brake caliper -arrows-. Use the socket -T40027-.
  Note
t  Tie up brake caliper to body with wire.
t  Do not suspend the brake caliper from the brake hose.
–  Remove brake disc.
–  Remove coil spring → Chapter.

–  Remove flange bolt -1-.
–  Unbolt splash plate -3-.

Vehicles with front-wheel drive
–  Detach wheel bearing unit -2-.
  Note
Wheel bearing unit is OK and does not have to be renewed if it can be pulled off hub carrier by hand.

All vehicles (continued):
–  Unbolt speed sensor -2-.
–  Using a felt-tip pen or similar, mark position of eccentric bolt -1- on top of hub carrier/wheel bearing housing.
–  Detach the illustrated bolt connections in the following sequence: Item 5, Item 3, Item 4, Item 1.
–  Pull off hub carrier or wheel bearing housing.
  Note
On vehicles with four-wheel drive, carefully press off drive shaft.
Installing
  Note
Renew bolts and self-locking nuts ⇒ instructions in exploded views from → Chapter onwards.
Bonded rubber bushes can only be turned to a limited extent. The mountings of the suspension links must therefore only be tightened when the suspension is in the unladen position → Chapter.
Vehicles with front-wheel drive
–  Install new wheel bearing unit if required ⇒ note on → Anchor.

All vehicles (continued):
–  Tighten bolt connections -1-, -3-, -4- and -5-.
–  Secure wheel speed sensor -2- → Item (front-wheel drive) or → Item (four-wheel drive).
–  Bolt splash plate and brake caliper onto hub carrier or wheel bearing housing. → Brake system; Rep. Gr. 46; Rear brakes type C38; Servicing brake caliper
Vehicles with four-wheel drive
–  Screw in 5 wheel bolts hand-tight and apply handbrake firmly.

All vehicles (continued):
–  Tighten flange bolt -1- initially only to specified torque, without turning further (turn bolt through specified angle at a later stage when vehicle is standing on its wheels) → Item (front-wheel drive) or → Item (four-wheel drive).
–  Install coil spring → Chapter.
–  Fit and secure wheel → Wheels and tyres; Rep. Gr.44.
Tightening torques:
  A42-0250
t  Item 1 - (set eccentric bolt to previously marked position) → Item
t  Items. 3 and 4 - → Item
t  Item 5 - → Item, (front-wheel drive) or → Item (four-wheel drive)
–  Tighten flange bolt -1- → Anchor, Fig. A42-0250 by turning through specified angle → Item, (front-wheel drive) or → Item (four-wheel drive).

Vehicles with front-wheel drive
–  Remove wheel.
–  Drive in new grease cap.
–  Fit and secure wheel → Wheels and tyres; Rep. Gr.44.
  Note
t  Always renew damaged (dented) grease caps.
t  Damaged (dented) grease caps may allow moisture to enter the bearing. For this reason it is important to use the tool shown in the illustration.
All vehicles (continued):
–  Check and adjust wheel alignment → Chapter.
Wheel alignment must always be checked and adjusted if necessary using VW/Audi-approved equipment.
