The illustration shows a left-hand drive vehicle. The installation in right-hand drive vehicles is symmetrically opposite.
The illustration applies to 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder engines
The power steering box is removed and installed complete with track rods.
   
1 - Power steering box with track rods
q   Removing and installing (LHD) → Chapter
q   Removing and installing (RHD) → Chapter
q   Servicing → Chapter
q   Different versions available → Parts catalogue
2 - Bolt with washer, 40 Nm and turn 90° further
q   Always renew
3 - Bolt, 30 Nm
4 - Steering column
5 - Bulkhead seal
q   Check for splits and chafing
q   Note correct installation position → Chapter (left-hand drive) and → Chapter (right-hand drive)
6 - Bolt with washer, 40 Nm and turn 90° further
q   Always renew
7 - Hexagon bolt
q   → Item
8 - Bolt
9 - Self-locking nut
q   → Item
10 - Hub carrier (steering arm)
11 - Banjo bolt, 47 Nm
12 - Seal
q   Always renew
13 - Return hose
14 - Return hose connection, 40 Nm
q   Coloured markings must line up
15 - Seal
q   Always renew
16 - Socket head bolt, 22 Nm
q   Screw plug → Fig.
17 - Seal
q   Always renew
18 - Expansion hose

20 - Banjo bolt with non-return valve, 35 Nm

Setting steering to centre position:
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
t  Steering centring bolt -VAS 6224-
Steering box (sectional drawing)
1 - Plug, 22 Nm
2 - Screw in steering centring bolt -VAS 6224- as far as possible by hand.
3 - Steering rack
4 - Steering box housing
–  Move steering wheel slightly to left and right of centre position.
–  Have a second mechanic screw steering centring bolt -VAS 6224- into the steering box until it is felt to engage in the centring hole.
