Removing and installing track rod ball joint Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Tool insert -V.A.G 1332/12- t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332- Removing –  Remove wheel.

–  Remove bolt -1-. –  Unscrew hexagon nut -5- and take out bolt -2-.   Note t  Do not attempt to enlarge slots in wheel bearing housing using a chisel or similar.

t  Do not apply a chisel or similar tool between steering arm -1- and seal -2- on track rod ball joint when pressing out track rod, otherwise the seal can be damaged. t  When pressing track rod out of steering arm, apply pressure only to end of track rod ball joint, or knock out end of joint using a wooden or rubber mallet. –  Press track rod out downwards.

–  Loosen hexagon nut -3- and unscrew track rod ball joint. Hexagon flats -4- serve to counterhold track rod. –  Remove all grease from track rod ball joint and clamping bore in wheel bearing housing. Installing Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence. Note the following points: –  Screw track rod ball joint onto stop on track rod.

–  Tighten lock nut -3- → Item using socket -V.A.G 1332/12-. Counterhold track rod at hexagon flats -4- when tightening nut. –  Align track rod so that pin of track rod ball joint is in installation position. –  Insert track rod as far as it will go in steering arm.   Note

Only fit the track rod into the steering arm -1- by hand; do not apply pressure to seal -2- on track rod joint.

–  Insert bolt -2-, then fit and tighten nut -5- → Item. –  Insert and tighten bolt -1- → Item. –  Fit and secure wheel → Wheels and tyres; Rep. Gr.44. –  Check and adjust wheel alignment → Chapter. Wheel alignment must always be checked and adjusted if necessary using VW/Audi-approved equipment.
