| The navigation system RNS-JP3 consists of the navigation unit in the centre console (top). The DVD and MD player is fitted behind the swivelling operating and display unit. |
| The RNS-JP3 determines the position of the vehicle within the range of the map stored on DVD by evaluating the data received via GPS, a built-in gyro sensor and the vehicle speed signal. |
| The system uses these measured values to establish the direction of and distance covered by the vehicle. These values are compared with the stored road network on the navigation DVD. |
| The position is continuously adapted when the vehicle is moving (dead reckoning). The correctness of the position is enhanced by checking the plausibility of the signals. Correction is made in the navigation control unit if there is a discrepancy between position measured and the position on stored road network. |
