Removing and installing seat position sensor - equipment version with seat occupied recognition system controlling deactivation of front passenger airbag
Seat position sensor is part of wiring harness leading to seat occupied recognition control unit -J706-; do not unplug electrical connectors. For renewing seat position sensor, electrical wires leading to seat position sensor must be severed and new seat position sensor must be connected using crimp connectors.
Removing
  WARNING
t  Observe safety regulations for working on pyrotechnic components → Chapter and seat occupied sensors controlling deactivation of front passenger airbag → Chapter.
t  Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. unplugging the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.
–  Remove front seat:
t  Standard seat and sports seat (with manual adjustment) → Chapter „Removing and installing front standard seat (with manual adjustment)“.
t  Standard seat, sports seat (with electric adjustment), convenience seat and super sports seat → Chapter „Removing and installing front standard seat (with electric adjustment)“.
–  Attach front seat to seat repair stand -VAS 6136- → Chapter.

–  Unscrew bolt -3- and detach seat position sensor -4- from lower seat pan frame.
  Caution
Take care not to damage insulation of individual wires.
–  Cut back protective hose -2- almost up to retaining clip -1-.
–  Cut off both electrical wires at locations marked with -arrow A- and -arrow B- to approx. 1/3 to 2/3 of the free wire length.
Installing
  WARNING
t  Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
t  Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. plugging in the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.
–  Cut electrical wires to same length at new seat position sensor as with old seat position sensor.
l  Electrical wires of the same colour must be cut to the same length.

–  Connect electrical wires with crimp connectors -arrow A- and -arrow B- → Electrical system, General information; Rep. gr.97.
–  Wrap wiring harness with reinforced adhesive tape starting at seat position sensor over entire wiring harness.
–  Install seat position sensor, making sure that hook -arrow C- on seat position sensor is inserted in lower seat pan frame.
Perform remaining installation steps in reverse order of removal; observe the following:
  Note
Make sure electrical connectors are fitted correctly (as far as stop) and engage audibly.
  WARNING
The battery must be connected with the ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag or belt tensioner) are inexpertly repaired, this may result in unwanted triggering after connecting the battery. There must not be anyone in the vehicle while you are connecting the battery.
–  With ignition switched on, connect battery earth wire → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
  Note
If the airbag warning lamp -K75- indicates a fault following installation, you must interrogate, erase and then re-interrogate the event memory → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
