Final drive, differential, differential lock > < Determining preload of tapered roller bearings for spur gear
Determining thickness of new shim “S6” for adjusting position of centre differential
Determining thickness of new shim “S6” for adjusting position of centre differential
This adjustment is necessary when the following components are renewed:
t  Gearbox cover
t  Spacer sleeve
t  Spur gear
t  Tapered roller bearings on spur gear
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Straightedge -T 40100-
t  Digital depth gauge (e.g. -VAS 6087-)
l  Tapered roller bearing outer race for spur gear is installed in gearbox cover.

l  Spur gear and spacer sleeve -1- are installed.
–  Position straightedge -T40100- onto cleaned joint surface of gearbox cover.
–  Using digital depth gauge -2- (e.g. digital depth gauge -VAS 6087-), measure depth between spacer sleeve -1- and straightedge. When taking measurement, press spur gear downwards towards gearbox cover, in direction of -arrow-.
In example: measurement -a- = 5.13 mm.
–  Add the height of straightedge -T 40100- to this measurement.

Example: 
 Depth as measured with digital depth gauge (measurement -a-)5.13 mm
+Height of straightedge -T 40100-39.70 mm
=Measuring range (overall dimension)44.83 mm

Select required shim from table → Anchor.

  Note
Select correct shims from → Electronic parts catalogue.
–  The shim thickness “S6” in this example is 0.91 mm.
