Checking valve timing
–  Remove timing chain cover (top) → Chapter.
–  Remove noise insulation → Rep. gr.66.

–  Working from below, turn vibration damper in direction of engine rotation to „TDC“ position -arrow-.
  Note
To turn the vibration damper, use a ratchet with 24 mm socket. Always turn vibration damper to „TDC“ in normal direction of rotation. Do NOT move back to TDC position by turning in reverse direction.
l  Notch on vibration damper must align with arrow marking on bottom cover for timing chains (use a mirror).
l  The markings -1- on the camshafts must face upwards.

–  Measure distance from outer edge of rib -1- to marking -2- on inlet camshaft.
l  Specification: 61 … 64 mm.
  A15-11211
–  If specification is obtained, measure distance between marking on exhaust camshaft -3- and marking on inlet camshaft -4-.
l  Specification: 124 … 126 mm.
  Note
If the timing chain is one tooth out of position, this results in a deviation of approx. 6 mm from specification. The timing chain must be refitted if it is not in the correct position.
