Basic setting for dynamic steering
Basic setting for dynamic steering
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051 B- with appropriate diagnosis cable

t  Steering wheel balance -VAS 6458-
t  Wheel alignment computer
There are two options for performing the basic setting on the dynamic steering system:
„Quick-start“
   This procedure should be selected if:
t  The active steering control unit -J792- has been renewed.
t  The steering angle sender -G85- has been calibrated.
t  The steering column has been renewed.
t  The steering wheel is not straight when driving in a straight line.
„Full wheel alignment“
   This procedure should be selected if:
t  The suspension geometry has been adjusted when checking wheel alignment.
t  The front axle toe setting has been changed.
t  The rear axle toe setting has been changed.
t  The running gear of the vehicle has been modified in any way – e.g. conversion from standard running gear to sports running gear.

  Note
t  The two procedures are programmed on the wheel alignment computer.
t  Each procedure runs automatically.
t  All you have to do is select the relevant program.

Carry out wheel rim runout compensation → Chapter.Carry out wheel rim runout compensation → Chapter.
Wheel alignment computer indicates „Front wheels straight-ahead“Perform initial wheel alignment → Chapter
Connect vehicle diagnosis, testing and information systemAlign wheels
Select „Function/component selection“ → Anchor.Perform final wheel alignment
 Answer prompt: „Dynamic steering fitted?“
 Wheel alignment computer indicates „Front wheels straight-ahead“
 Connect vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system
 Select „Function/component selection“ → Anchor.

  Note
t  Before starting basic setting procedure, the steering angle sender -G85- must be calibrated with the steering wheel balance -VAS 6458-.
t  Before starting basic setting procedure, interrogate event memory and rectify any faults.
–  Connect battery charger → Rep. gr.27.
–  Connect vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051 B- to vehicle.
–  Select basic setting for dynamic steering system on wheel alignment computer.
–  Attach quick-release clamps to all four wheels.
–  Attach wheel alignment sensors to front and rear wheels.
–  Carry out wheel rim runout compensation → Chapter.
–  Set front wheels to straight-ahead position when instructed to do so by wheel alignment computer.
  Note
t  Disregard the steering wheel position!
t  Only the display on the wheel alignment computer applies!
The remaining steps are now performed using the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system.
–  Switch on ignition.
–  Touch the Guided Fault Finding button on the display screen.
–  Select the following:
t  Make
t  Model
t  Model year
t  Version
t  Engine code letters
–  Confirm the entered information.
Wait until the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system has interrogated all the control units in the vehicle.
–  Press the Go to button and select the option „Function/component selection“.
–  Select the relevant program in „Guided Functions“.
Then follow basic setting instructions on screen.
