Determining pre-load of tapered roller bearings for input gear/spur gear mechanism
Determining pre-load of tapered roller bearings for input gear/spur gear mechanism
Determining shim “S5
This setting has to be made if the following components are replaced:
t  Gearbox cover
t  End cover
t  Input gear/spur gear mechanism
t  Tapered roller bearing on input gear/spur gear mechanism
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Measuring plate -VW 385/17- from universal measuring tool -VW 385-
  W00-0958
t  Universal dial gauge bracket -VW 387-
  W00-0037
t  Crown wheel adjusting tool -VW 521-
  W00-0151
t  Dial gauge extension from adapter for dial gauge -2066-
l  Outer race/tapered roller bearing for mounting of input gear/spur gear mechanism installed in gearbox cover.
l  Outer race/tapered roller bearing with no shim for mounting of input gear/spur gear mechanism installed in end cover.
–  Insert the input gear/spur gear mechanism in the gearbox cover.

–  Then attach the end cover -B- to the gearbox cover with the bolts -A- and -arrows- (5x).
–  Then move the gearbox cover with end cover attached to the vertical position with the end cover facing downwards.

–  Fit the measurement tools.
–  Attach the universal dial gauge bracket -VW 387- at the hole in the gearbox cover with the bolt -B- and a nut.
–  Position the dial gauge extension at the centre of the measuring plate -VW 385/37-.
–  Set the dial gauge (3 mm measuring range) with 2 mm initial tension to “0”.
-A-Dial gauge extension from adapter for dial gauge -2066-
–  Move the input gear/spur gear mechanism up and down with the crown wheel adjusting tool -VW 521-.
–  Read off the play on the dial gauge (0.76 mm in the example).
Example:
  A35-10211
Measurement result (example)0.76 mm
Initial tension (constant value)+ 0.10 mm
Thickness of shim S5= 0.86 mm

  Note
Assign the shims by way of the → Electronic parts catalogue.
–  In this example, the thickness of the shim “S5” is 0.86 mm.
