Brake Rotor/Disc: Service and Repair
Up to VIN 4A PN 078 948

Rear disc brakes with automatic adjustment up to VIN...4A PN O78 948 (1993)

CAUTION: Always install all parts included in repair kit
Brakes can be tested on any commercially available brake dynamometer provided the drive roller speed does not exceed 5.5 km/h {3.3 mph).

1. Parking brake cable

Adjusting, refer to Adjustments  See: Adjustments

2. Brake caliper housing

Detach from brake carrier to replace brake pads
Do not disconnect brake hose

3. Spring clip

Attach parking brake cable to thrust bearing

4. Self-locking bolt

Always replace
35 Nm (26 ft lb)
Hold guide pin to prevent it moving when loosening and tightening

5. Brake carrier with guide pins and protective caps

Supplied as replacement part fully assembled with sufficient grease on guide pins
If protective caps have been damaged, install repair kit Part No.443 698 470
Use grease pad provided in repair kit to lubricate guide pins

6. Mounting bolt 65 Nm (48 ft lb)

7. Brake pads

Replace in pairs
Thickness (new): 12 mm (0.47 in)
Wear limit: 2 mm (0.08 in)
When pad thickness including backing plate is down to 7 mm (0.28 in), brake pads have reached their wear limit and should be replaced

8. Brake disc

Replace in pairs
Remove brake caliper first
Resurface uniformly on both sides when necessary, starting from thickness when new; make sure that thickness of resurfaced disc is sufficiently
