Vehicle Speed Sensor: Testing and Inspection

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Signal, Checking

NOTE:  The vehicle speed signal is generated by the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) at the transmission and processed in the instrument cluster.

Requirement

Speedometer function and display OK
-

If speedometer does not indicate vehicle speed:

Connect VAG1551 or VAG1552 Scan Tool (ST) and press buttons -0- and -1 - to insert "Engine Electronics" address word 01 (engine running at
idle). Refer to "Scan Tool Testing/Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks/VAG1551 or VAG1552 Scan Tool" See: Powertrain
Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection

Press buttons -0- and -8- to select "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08, and press -Q- button to confirm input.

Check specified value for vehicle speed (display field 4):

Road test. 

WARNING!

When driving or riding in an airbag equipped vehicle, NEVER hold the scan tool or other test equipment in your hands or lap while in
motion. Objects between you and the airbag increase the risk of injury in an accident.

-

During a test drive in an airbag-equipped vehicle, test equipment must always be fastened to and operated from the rear seat by a second
technician.

-

Check value in display field 4.
Actual vehicle speed must be displayed (compare with vehicle speed indicated on speedometer).

If speed is not indicated:

-

Press button to advance program sequence.

-

Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function 06, and press -Q- button to confirm input.

Connect VAG1598/19 test box to ECM harness connector. Refer "Scan Tool Testing/Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks/VAG1598/19 Test
Box, Connecting" See: Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection

Check wiring for continuity or short circuit between ECM/test box socket C13 and instrument cluster

Check wiring to all additional users of vehicle speed signal (e.g. radio, automatic transmission, A/C, etc.) according to wiring diagrams. Test each
system, one at a time, and continue testing to isolate cause of malfunction.
