Rear Knuckle: Procedures
Wheel Bearing Housing, Raising to Control Position to Tighten Bolts
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
‹› Torque wrench (5-50 Nm) (VAG 1331)
‹› Torque wrench (40-200 Nm) (VAG 1332)
‹› Engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383A)
‹› Torque wrench (5-60 Nm) (VAG 1783)
‹› Wheel hub support (T10149)
‹› Open end spanner insert AF 10 (VAG 1783/1)
‹› Wood block (hardwood) 30 x 50 x 1,000 mm
Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent.
Before suspension components with bonded rubber bushings are tightened, they have to be brought to a position which matches the position when the
vehicle is being operated (control position).
Otherwise the rubber bushings will be stressed, resulting in a reduced service life.
This position can be simulated on the hoist by raising the wheel bearing housing using the (VAG 1383A) and the (T10149).
Before Adjusting the Control Position
-
Place the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on the Hoist and on its Wheels ] See: Service and Repair/Procedures/Positioning
Vehicle on the Hoist and on its Wheels.
-
Remove the wheel housing liner.
-
Clean the air spring damper air connection area.
-
Remove the connecting piece - 1 - from the residual pressure valve - 2 -. Air then escapes.
‹› Generally, the residual pressure valve - 2 - must not be loosened or removed.
-
Seal both connections. Make sure that no dust particles enter the connections.
-
Remove the bolt - 1 - for the level control system sensor.
