Affected Vehicles
64 Wind Noises Come From the Door Area
Condition
Customer may report wind noises coming from the door area. There are four conditions that could cause this to happen, each represented in an
illustration below.
Condition 1. Door mirror whistles from 85 mph.
Condition 2. Hissing in the mirror triangle from 85 mph if the air conditioning is switched on. The noise stops when the air conditioning is switched off.
Condition 3. Door mirror wind noise (similar to the sound of an insect buzzing) from 45 mph.
Condition 4. Wind noises in the area of the window channel strip.
Technical Background
Condition 1. The foam piece on the frame arch (the upper mirror triangle) presses against the window guide. As a result, the mirror triangle no longer
touches the door frame. This leads to whistling between the mirror triangle and door frame.
Condition 2. The Terolan seal in the upper mirror triangle is not tight. A hole in the door frame arch is visible.
Condition 3. The felt spacers between the mirror foot and mirror housing are missing or chafed off.
Condition 4. Wrong installation of the inner window channel strip.
Production Solution
Improved production.
Service
Condition 1. Remove the corner trim on the inner door frame. Carefully remove any protruding foam with a knife. Detach the mirror and position it
correctly to the door frame. Refit the inner corner trim.
Condition 2. Remove the mirror. Check whether the seal is correct. If necessary, apply silicone sealant approved for aluminum body.
Condition 3. Fold back the mirror. Check whether the felt is fitted. If it is and the noise still occurs, stick felt on the complete area.
