Constant Velocity Joint: Testing and Inspection
Front Suspension (AWD)
Outer constant velocity joint, checking
Joint must be disassembled to replace grease if heavily contaminated or if bearing surfaces of balls are to be checked for wear and damage.
Disassembling
-
Use electric marker or whetstone to mark position of ball hub in relation to ball cage and housing.
-
Swivel ball hub and ball cage.
-
Remove balls one after the other.
-
Rotate cage until two rectangular openings -arrow- make contact with joint body.
-
Lift out cage with hub.
-
Swivel segment of hub with shortened pin into the rectangular opening of the cage.
-
Tip hub out of cage.
Checking
The 6 balls for each joint are of the same tolerance group. Check stub axle, hub, cage and balls for pitting and signs of seizure. Excessive backlash in
the joint becomes apparent from knocking noise. In such cases the joint must be replaced. Smooth areas and running marks on the balls do not
constitute grounds for joint replacement.
Assembling
-
Install cage with hub into joint body.
