Air Bag: Service and Repair
Driver's Side Airbag Unit, Removing and Installing

WARNING!
Airbags and related equipment (e.g. steering wheel) must only be disassembled, assembled and repaired by trained Audi Service Department
personnel.

Before working on any airbag, steering wheel or steering column components, always disconnect the battery.

-

For m.y. 1994 and 1995 vehicles, disconnecting the battery alone will NOT prevent the accidental deployment of the airbag(s). Always
disconnect the airbag power supply harness connector, and refer to the all airbag system Warnings and Cautions.

Make sure that no person is in the vehicle when connecting the battery Ground (GND) strap.

CAUTION!
Before disconnecting the battery, determine the correct coding for the anti-theft radio.

Removing

-

Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.

-

Disconnect airbag power supply harness connector.

-

Remove left and right airbag unit retaining screws (Torx(R) T30).

-

Tilt airbag unit (horn bar) down.

CAUTION!

-

From m. y. 1994 the airbag connector retaining clip -A- is no longer required and has been discontinued (though still installed
intermittently on some m. y. 1994 vehicles).

DO NOT try to remove an existing retaining clip.

-

DO NOT automatically replace the airbag unit because of a missing retaining clip.

-

DO NOT try to install a retaining clip on an airbag unit that did not have one originally.

-

Disconnect airbag unit connector retaining clip (arrow -A-) where applicable.

Front passenger side unit is identical.

-

Disconnect airbag unit harness connector (arrow -B-).

-

Remove airbag unit.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, note the following:
