Transfer Case Gear Oil Level, Checking and Filling

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

‹› Oil collecting and extracting device (VAG 1782)

‹› Protective glasses

Procedure

‹› Gear oil temperature at approximately 20 °C (room temperature). 

‹› Move vehicle onto a four post hoist or over a work pit so that it sits absolutely horizontal.

‹› The transmission must be still for at least 15 minutes to make sure the oil settles internally.

‹› Clean working conditions for the automatic transmission. Refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions ] See: Transmission and Drivetrain/Automatic

Place used oil collection and extraction device ( V.A.G 1782) under the transmission.

CAUTION!
Danger of eye injury.

‹› Wear protective goggles!

Remove the drain plug - arrow - on the side of the transfer case.

‹› Specification: Oil level is correct when the transfer case is filled up to lower edge of oil filler hole.

Allow the excess gear oil to drain if necessary.

Add gear oil if necessary until it runs out of the gear oil filler hole.

‹› Gear oil specification.

Repeat the process in steps every 15 seconds with 50 ml of gear oil until the transfer case stops accepting gear oil.
