Valve Guide: Testing and Inspection

Valve guides, checking

Special tools and equipment required

Universal dial gauge holder VW 387

Work sequence

Insert valve in guide. End of valve stem must be flush with guide. On account of differing stem diameters, use intake valve in intake guide and
exhaust valve in exhaust guide only.

Determine sideways play.

Wear limit 

Note:

If the wear limit is exceeded, repeat the measurement with new valves. Replace the cylinder head if the wear limit is still exceeded. Valve
guides cannot be replaced.

Use a new valve for measurement purposes if the valve is replaced as part of repair work.

Checking valves 

-

Visually inspect for scoring at stem and surface of seat. Replace valves if distinct scoring is noticed.
