Brake Fluid: Description and Operation
Brake fluid
General Information
Brake fluid is hydroscopic, it has the tendency to collect water and moisture from the air
The boiling point decreases with increased water content, i.e. vapor lock buildup is possible due to intense warming of the brake fluid which can lead
to brake failure.
As time passes, brake fluid becomes dark in color. Dark-colored brake fluid does not state anything about its quality. The discoloration occurs via
chemical reactions and can already occur after a short period of time (a few weeks), especially in vehicles with ABS.
WARNING: Rubber parts of brake system (boots, seals) cannot tolerate mineral oil, fuel and cleaning agents!
The smallest amount on a seal or a boot changes the component and can influence the function of the brake. The consequences of a contaminated
brake system appear only months later, then cause significant costs, especially in vehicles with ABS.
A= Boot - original size
B= Boot - swollen by coating of mineral oil
Resulting from the above mentioned points:
Always keep brake fluid containers sealed well. Only in this manner can it be ensured that no oil, dirt or cleaning agents and also no moisture can
penetrate.
Carefully store brake fluid containers separately from oil (also hydraulic oil) and cleaning fluids so that both fluids do not mix to prevent an incorrect
filling of brake system.
