Ignition Coil: Testing and Inspection
With Manufacturer's Scan Tool
Ignition Coils With Power Output Stage, Checking
NOTE: The ignition coil and the output stage are combined in a common component.
Checking Ground supply of output stage
-
Disconnect 4-pin connector from relevant ignition coil.
-
Check Ground connection from socket 2 on 4-pin connector to body Ground for open circuit or short to positive.
-
Correct any open/short circuit as necessary.
If the Ground connection is OK:
-
Check actuation of output stages.
Checking actuation of power output stages
-
Disconnect connectors from all eight injectors.
NOTE: It is important to ensure that no fuel is injected during the test, as this would damage the catalytic converter. Therefore, the connectors on the
injectors must be disconnected.
-
Disconnect 4-pin connector from relevant ignition coil.
-
Connect VAG 1527 diode test lamp to following contacts on power output stage connector:
-
Operate starter for a few seconds.

Specified value
3 + 2
Diode test lamp must flash (brief impulse)
If the specified values are not obtained:
-
Switch ignition off.
-
Connect test box VAG 1598/31 to wiring harness for engine control module; do not connect engine control module. See: Computers and Control
