Hydraulic Brake Booster: Testing and Inspection

1. With engine off, depress brake pedal approximately 20 times to reduce system pressure.
2. Disconnect warning light switch electrical connector, then remove switch.
3. Attach pressure gauge with hollow bolt and copper washers to brake servo unit. Attach thick copper washer between brake servo unit and banjo

fitting and thin copper washer between hollow bolt and banjo fitting.

4. Start engine and let idle until pressure gauge reading exceeds 2030 psi.
5. If specified pressure is not reached, check delivery rate of central hydraulic pump as follows.

a. Turn ignition OFF, leaving pressure gauge connected.
b. Disconnect pressure line from hydraulic pump.
c. Connect hose of pressure limiter tool No. VW 1354, or equivalent, to pump, using existing hollow bolt.
d. Remove fluid reservoir from cap.
e. Place end of pressure limiter hose into reservoir.

Start engine, let idle until line is bled, then turn ignition Off.

g. Insert hose in measuring jar, start engine, run at idle, then check delivery rate.
h. If delivery rate is not at least .3 qt. per minute, replace hydraulic pump.

If delivery rate is within specifications, but operating pressure is not, replace pressure accumulator.
