Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
Camshaft Position Sensor
The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) is located behind the camshaft sprocket. The Camshaft Position Sensor signal is used to recognize ignition point
for cylinder number one (1) for starting the engine. The signal is also used for cylinder selective knock control and to determine fuel injection timing
and sequence.
The engine cannot be started if the CMP signal is not received by the Motronic control module. If the signal fails during engine operation, the ignition
timing will be retared by 11°. In addition, the charge pressure is reduced and knock control is stopped.
