Timing Cover: Service and Repair
Sealing Flanges and Flywheel, Removing and Installing
Notes:

When working on the engine, it should be secured to the engine stand using the engine bracket VW 540.
1 - 90 Nm + 1/4 turn (90°) further
^
Replace
^
Counter - hold with 3099 to loosen and tighten
^
Place 2 washers between sprocket and retainer when screwing on retainer
2 - Crankshaft sprocket
^
Can only be installed in one position
^
Contact surface between sprocket and crankshaft must be free of oil
^
Removing and installing toothed belt, Refer to Timing Belt, Service and Repair.
3 - 15 Nm
4 - Oil seal
^
Replacing, Refer to Seals and Gaskets, Engine, Front Crankshaft Seal, Service and Repair.
5 - Sealing flange, front
^
Must be located on dowel sleeves
^
Removing and installing, Refer to Front Sealing Flange, Removing and Installing.
6 - Cylinder block
^
Removing and installing crankshaft, Refer to Crankshaft, Service and Repair.
^
Disassembling and assembling pistons and connecting rods; Refer to Pistons, Service and Repair.
7 - 60 Nm + 1/4
^
The half turn further can be done in several stages
^
Replace
8 - Dual mass flywheel drive plate
^
Can only be installed in one position (holes are offset)
^
Removing and installing dual mass flywheel, Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
^
Removing and installing drive plate, Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
9 - Intermediate plate
^
Must be located on dowel sleeves
^
Do not damage or bend when assembling
^
Is fitted on sealing flange, Refer to Fig. 1
10 - Rear sealing flange with oil seal
^
With gasket for cylinder block
^
Replacement sealing flange has oil seal in different position
^
Remove sump in order to remove and install.
^
Clean sealing surface before installing.
