To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order. Observe the following when doing so:

CAUTION!
‹› Observe safety precautions for work on airbags. Refer to => [ Airbag System General Safety Precautions ] See: Air Bag Systems/Air

Bag/Service Precautions.

‹› Before handling airbag units (e.g. disconnecting electrical connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". This

can be done by touching door striker, for example.

‹› Ensure that electrical connections are pushed in as far as stop and engage with a click.

Switch on ignition.

CAUTION!
Ignition must be on when connecting battery. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag, belt tensioner) are not repaired correctly, they may
deploy unintentionally after connecting battery. There must not be anyone inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.

Connect battery with ignition on.

If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (K75 ) indicates a fault after installation, DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again.

‹› After replacing control module, it must be coded. 

‹› Airbag Control Module (J234) ground connection takes place with chassis over housing.

Battery Interrupt Igniter

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

‹› Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System ( VAS 5051B)

Removing

CAUTION!
‹› Battery Interrupt Igniters (N253) are pyrotechnic components. The same safety measures apply as with airbags. Observe safety

precautions for work on airbags. Refer to => [ Airbag System General Safety Precautions ] See: Air Bag Systems/Air Bag/Service
Precautions. 

‹› Observe disposal of pyrotechnic airbag units. Refer to => [ Disposing of Airbag Modules ] See: Air Bag Systems/Air Bag/Service

Precautions.

‹› If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (K75) lights up after a vehicle accident, check whether crash data is stored using. If this is the case,

check whether the malfunction 001 Resistance too large is saved in Battery Interrupt Igniter (N253) DTC memory. If this is the case, Battery
Interrupt Igniter (N253) must be replaced.

‹› The Battery Interrupt Igniter (N253) interrupts the circuit electrically each time an airbag is deployed. The Battery Interrupt Igniter (N253) must

always be replaced after a deployment.

Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.

Remove cover from luggage compartment floor.

-

Disconnect the battery ground (GND) strap.

Disconnect battery positive strap - 1 - and remove it with auxiliary fuse panel cover.
