Environmentally compatible oil filter
M10, M20 and M30
Situation:
In order to meet increasing environmental requirements regarding single-type disposal of oil
filters, environmenally compatible oil filters are being introduced to current models and at
the same time similar versions are being made available for earlier engines.
To this end, the design has changed on M10 and M20 engines. Instead of the complete
cartridge, there is now an oil filter case with a non-metallic interchangeable filter element
(see Fig. 1).
Fig. 1: Comparison of future environmentally compatible oil filter (1) and previous oil filter
(2).
Similarly, a new, "materially pure" (= materials of the same type) filter element will be
available for M30 engines in the near future. This will feature paper, plastic or felt discs to
replace the current sheet metal skirt on the filter ends.
Effect:
- Reduced disposal complexity for separating composite materials
- Reduced volume and weight of residue (up to 90%)
- Reduced disposal costs
- Sign of high environmental awareness
- Reduced follow-on costs for change of filter element
Affected
vehicles:
E12 vehicles with M10 and M20 engines from 1972
E21 vehicles with M10 and M20 engines from 1975
E28 vehicles with M10 and M20 engines from 1981
E30 vehicles with M10 and M20 engines from 1982
E34 vehicles with M20 engine from 1988
Z1 vehicles with M20 engine from 1988
All with M30 engine (in preparation)
Action:
Within the scope of the next oil change, the benefits of the environmentally compatible oil
filter should be explained to the customer and its installation be recommended.
