"Toothed-belt replacement" sticker

M20, M21, M40

Situation: 

In response to the wish expressed by the dealer organisation for a visible sign that the
toothed belt has been replaced, the engine compartment sticker previously familiar to you
has been brought back and incorporated in the component programme - see figure on
page 2.

Only engines that carry this sticker (identfied by the BMW logo) indicate that the toothed
belt has been replaced by a BMW dealership in accordance with the manufacturer's
specifications and using special tools (workshop guarantee).

In addition, this sticker indicates to the inspection personnel that, when the exhaust
emissions test is performed, no engine damage is likely as a consequence of ageing of the
toothed belt and/or incorrect fitting.

Affected vehicles:

All BMW vehicles with M20, M21 and M40 engines

Procedure:

Each time the toothed belt is replaced, the sticker illustrated in the figure on page 2 must be
affixed at a clearly visible location in the engine compartment, e.g. on the fan shroud (after
degreasing this point). Enter the date and mileage at the time of replacement using a
permanent felt pen and put a cross in the "Exchange" box.

Toothed-belt change interval:

-

M20 and M21: Every 2nd Inspection II (on average approx. every 
90,000 km (56,000 miles) or 180,000 km (112,500 miles) )

-

M40: Every Inspection II (on average approx. every 45,000 km - 90.000 - 135.000 -
180.000 km (28,000 - 56,000 - 84,000 - 112,500 miles) etc.

Irrespective of the mileage covered, the toothed belt must be replaced at the latest
after 4 years due to ageing (ozone etc.)!

These stickers should not be sold to none BMW workshops as part of normal parts
sales!
