Engine dies after starting, fault 41 in DME

E34E36 with M40, M43

Complaint: 

- Dying after cold start
- Dying after hot start
- Fault 41 is stored in DME control unit

Cause: 

Due to dirt in the air intake system, particularly in the idle-speed control valve, the changed
air requirement for starting was not adapted (no correction of the opening cross-section of
the idle-speed control valve by the self-learning procedure).

This causes frequent incorrect  entries to be made in the fault memory (fault 41, defective
air-flow sensor (LMM)).

The air-flow sensor is generally OK!

To prevent the engine from dying, the idle-speed controller switches to substitute values.

Affected
vehicles:

E34/M40 Manufacturing period: 7/92 to 3/94
E34/M43 Manufacturing period: 3/94 to 6/96
E36/M40 Manufacturing period: 7/92 to 9/93
E36/M43 Manufacturing period: 9/93 to 1/96 (introduction of DME 1.7.3)

Remedy: 

Install a modified idle-speed control valve. This valve has a larger air gap at the rotary slide
to the housing, and is therefore less susceptible to soiling.

Procedure:

In the case of customer complaints, interrogate and then erase the fault memory.

Replace the old idle-speed control valve (recognisable from the part number on the sticker)
with the new, modified idle-speed control valve. The individual work steps are described in
the Repair Instructions.

Refer to Repair Instructions 13 41 500.

Note:

Replacing the air-flow sensor, caused by the fault entry 41, does not solve the
problem!

Sent-in air-flow sensors that were checked and are OK will be rejected by the
Warranty Department and sent back.
