Checking engine idling speed and exhaust
contents, adjusting if necessary (M40, M42,
M43) - vehicle without catalytic converter -

Requirements for all adjustments:

Engine at normal operating temperature (oil temperature > 60 

°

C).

Engine and ignition system functioning correctly.

Connect up BMW SERVICE TEST.

Check idling speed:

Engine Test Step No. 5.

1) Engine idle speed

Check engine idle speed

If the specified value is not achieved, refer to: Electrical
Troubleshooting Manual for 3 Series E36.

Additional instructions, refer to point 3).

2) Exhaust test:

Insert exhaust sensor in exhaust tailpipe. 

Check exhaust contents at idle speed.

Switch off exhaust extraction system for time of testing. If nominal
value is not achieved, exhaust contents can also be measured

by individual cylinder group,

refer to 13 00 060
