Diagnosis disturbances
E36 with ABS
Complaint:
Isolated examples of the following complaints have been reported to us from hot countries:
-
The ABS failure light goes on. On vehicles with a warning gong, the gong may also
sound at the same time.
-
All instrument cluster readings fall to zero briefly. On vehicles with a warning gong, the
gong may also sound at the same time.
-
The lights in the switches for the air conditioning, air recirculation mode and the rear
screen heater go on although these systems are not actually working.
-
The air conditioning system fails sporadically when the car is moving.
-
It is impossible to control the air distribution and/or the heater.
-
The electric window lifts or central locking system fail.
These complaints may arise individually or in combination with one another. In addition, the
customer's complaints are not normally comprehensible.
If, when diagnosing the vehicle with the DIS, BMW Service Tester or MoDiC in connection
with one of the above complaints, one of the following messages appears:
1.
Diagnosis of all diagnosable control units disturbed, i.e. no diagnosis is possible.
2.
Some, but not all diagnosable control units (in addition to the ABS control unit) can be
selected/diagnosed.
3.
Diagnosis is possible, but implausible faults are stored in memory.
4.
All control units are diagnosable, no fault stored in memory,
the cause described below may be responsible.
Cause:
Electrostatic charging of the front axle. The static is discharged via the ABS sensor lead to
the ABS control unit. From there, under certain circumstances, it may be passed on to
further diagnosable systems via the TXD lead.
The faults listed at the beginning of this SI may be caused by the pick-up of electrical
pulses.
Attention:
Similar fault patterns can also be caused by loose positive or earth connections, poor
plug connections (loose contact) or inadequate battery voltage.
Procedure:
-
In the event of this complaint arising, read out all diagnosable systems with the DIS,
BMW Service Tester or MoDiC.

Print out all diagnostic readings, even when no fault has been stored in memory or
when no control units were found.
-
Erase fault memory.
-
If these fault patterns and diagnostic messages arise, you should also always fit
additional earthing wires on each side of the front axle, leading from the wheel carrier
to the bodyshell
(see Enclosure 2).
