Heater not providing enough heat at idle speed
E36 petrol-engined
Complaints:
Heating capacity at idle-speed too low, however no problems occur during driving.
Cause:
Too little water being pumped to the heater.
Affected
vehicles:
E36 petrol-engined M42, M43, M44, M50, M52
Start of series production through March 1996.
Remedy:
In the case of a customer complaint, the thermostat and the water valve (not on E36
compact with heater control) must be checked and replaced if necessary.
Note:
No water valve is installed on the E36 compact with heater control (HS36).
Procedure:
Check thermostat and replace if necessary:
Remove thermostat.
-
Check whether a new double-disc thermostat (refer to parts for part number) has been
installed.
-
If a double-disc thermostat has not already been installed, then replace the
thermostat.
Check water valve and replace if necessary (except on E36 compact with HS36):
-
Check whether a new water valve with a "caulked" sealing cone has already been
installed. The "caulked" water valves can be recognised from the following part
number (PN):
With air-conditioning system E36 (except E36
compact) IHKR36, IHKA36
PN 64 11 8 391 419 or

PN 64 11 8 375 443
With air-conditioner control on E36 compact
(IHKS36)
PN 64 11 8 375 443
