Inadequate radio reception
E31, E38, E39, E36
without compact
Complaint:
Inadequate radio reception in all tuning ranges.
Cause:
Due to high mechanical loading, the internal conductor of the aerial cable may be
interrupted at the connection point transition in the aerial angled plug on the radio.
Affected
vehicles:
E31, E38, E39, E36 without compact
Manufacturing period: 11/96 to 04/97
Remedy:
In the event of customer complaint, install a new aerial angled plug.
At the end of April 1997, an optimised aerial cable was introduced in production. This can
be identified by a round lug on the aerial angled plug (radio connection). The lug is
intended to facilitate removal.
Procedure:
In the event of customer complaints regarding radio reception, locate a local medium wave
(MW) radio station with good reception for the purposes of troubleshooting. If good
reception cannot be obtained for this or another MW station, it is possible that the internal
conductor of the aerial lead is broken.
If the aerial angled plug is identified as the cause, it should be cut behind the strain relief
element.
Install the new aerial angled plug as follows:
Carefully remove the insulation from the
aerial cable, keeping to the dimensions
shown in the illustration and brush back
the shield (copper mesh).
No copper mesh on the internal
conductor insulation should project in
the direction of the internal conductor
(danger of shorting).
