Replacing Main Bearing Shells on BMW E36 320i (M50) Engine
Replacing main bearing shells (M50)
The crankshaft is marked with yellow, green or white paint
depending on main bearing journal tolerances.
Caution!
Check ground size of the crankshaft, refer to Technical Data.
1 Coat of paint: Size 1 (0.25 mm)
2 Coats of paint: Size 2 (0.50 mm)
Bearing shells are marked with yellow, green or white paint.

Thrust bearing shell
Check ground size of main bearing journals.
Install bearing shells in crankcase with same colour code as dot of
paint on the crankcase.
Install bearing shells in bearing caps with same colour code as on
the crankshaft.
If paint mark has been washed off crankcase, install both bearing
shells according to the crankshaft paint mark colour.
