DME Fault Entry
Oxygen Sensor
E36 / M52 ECE
Situation:
When vehicles with this engine are run for long periods in overrun (e.g. coasting for longer
than 30 seconds), the oxygen sensor is surrounded by "compression air" which cools it
down.
In the process, the lower voltage value of the control voltage is increased by 0.8 - 1.0 V to
approx. 1.5 V.
Effect:
This leads to the following faults being stored in the DME fault memory, even though there
is no fault in the oxygen-sensor control system.
200 - Oxygen-sensor voltage excursion, Sensor 1 and/or
201 - Oxygen-sensor voltage excursion, Sensor 2
Note:
These "wrongly" stored fault codes have no effect on the driveability of the vehicle and
there is no damage to the oxygen sensor.
Faults stored for this reason have no influence on the results of the official emissions
inspection. When conducting the alternative procedure ("Read out fault memory") on
the basis of the official emissions inspection test step "Control circuit test", ignore
these two fault numbers if the CO and lambda values remain within the setpoints
during idle-speed and part-load measurement.
Affected
vehicles:
E36 M52 ECE - all displacements
Manufacturing period: start of series production up to Aug. 30, 1995
Action:
Thanks to the modified DME data released in September 1995 and the resulting increase in
the heating current, the oxygen sensor is no longer cooled down as much in overrun and
the incorrect fault entry no longer occurs.
Procedure:
If DME fault entry "200" and/or "201" is read out while servicing a vehicle, proceed as
follows:
1.
The fault stored is indicated by the DIS/MoDiC as being "currently not present ":
In this case, ignore the DME fault entry and simply delete the DME fault memory.
The oxygen sensor is working properly and must not be replaced.
2.
If the fault is indicated as being "currently present ", replace the oxygen sensor.
Neither of the two cases justifies replacement of the DME control unit.
