Complaints concerning engine/clutch/transmission (dowels missing)
All vehicles
Situation:
Complaints concerning the transmission, clutch, engine or acoustics are occasionally
reported, the cause of which is attributed to dowels missing between the engine and
transmission.
In the majority of cases, after repair, e.g. of engine or transmission, the dowels necessary
for centring the engine/transmission were not reinstalled (result of investigations in the
field).
Note:
Refer to SI 23 04 89 (101).
Effect:
Flush alignment of flywheel with respect to transmission input shaft/torque converter is no
longer guaranteed. The following complaints can occur as a result:
-
Clutch judder/poor disengagement
-
Transmission input shaft produces noise
-
Gears jump
-
Snagging gearshift
-
Torque converter bearing in automatic transmission damaged/failed etc.
Procedure:
When carrying out all repairs in which the engine/transmission unit is separated, care must
be taken to ensure both dowels are fitted before reassembling the unit. Missing or
damaged dowels must be replaced.
Note:
In future, any warranty or goodwill claims which are proven to be attributed to the
dowels not being fitted will be rejected.
Parts:
The dowels can be obtained through the usual parts ordering channels:
