EWS II Malfunctions (Electronic Immobilizer)

E31, E34, E36, E38, E39

Complaints: 

1.

The starter motor cannot be activated from time to time with one particular  key. 

(Enclosure 1).

2.

The starter motor cannot be activated from time to time with all keys. 

(Enclosure 2)

3.

There is a delay when the starter motor is activated. 

(Enclosure 3)

4.

The EWS control unit cannot be diagnosed. 

(Enclosure 4).

5.

EWS control units/keys that have been ordered later do not function
(electrically/mechanically). 

(Enclosure 5).

Cause: 

Data exchange between the transponder in the key and the EWS control unit is disturbed.
For other causes, see the respective enclosure.

Affected
vehicles:

All models.
Manufacturing period: January '95 to November '95

(for Enclosures 1 to 3).

Procedure:

Please refer to the respective enclosure for the precise procedure to follow to remedy the
above-mentioned faults.
