Idle control valve soiled

M50

Complaint: 

-

After start, engine speed remains at 1000 - 1200 rpm or decreases only very slowly
and/or

-

Engine cuts out when load cuts in (A/C compressor, steering lock)
and/or

-

Engine speed not constant when idling and/or

-

While engine adjusts to idle speed, the engine speed dips and cuts out.

Cause: 

Depending on the driving profile, engine oil level as well as engine wear over time, the idle
speed control valve is soiled due to:

-

Dirt from the crankcase ventilation,

-

The return flow of gasses from the combustion chamber,

-

Particles in the air drawn in by the engine.

On the idle speed control valves of the type EWD1 and ZWD2  (single winding and dual
winding rotary idle actuator) this soiling can impair operation as follows: Intermittent sticking
of speed actuator and scoring on rotary slide valve. 

Important note

Due to their different internal design, type EWD3.2 and ZWD5  idle speed control
valves operate perfectly even when black deposits can be clearly seen on the
actuator. These idle speed control valves are not  the cause of the above complaints.

Due to their different designs, the different types of idle speed control valves are not
compatible. The corresponding allocation to the specific engine type must be
observed.

Affected
vehicles:

M50 B20, manufacturing period: 5/89 - discontinuation
M50 B25 without VANOS, manufacturing period: 5/89 - 8/92

Remedy: 

In the event of complaint, proceed as described in the following on vehicles with the
engines M50 B20 with and without VANOS as well as M50 B25 without VANOS:
Install a new idle speed control valve of the same type but with increased resistance to dirt,
as well as a modified air hose and a bellows (B20 only) to reduce soiling. 

Procedure:

All types of engine affected:

-

Replace idle speed control valve by optimised version with increased resistance to dirt.

-

Install a modified air hose with "dirt trap" between manifold and idle speed control
valve (please refer to Fig. 1 and 2).
