Reduced air output
E36 with IHKR
Complaint:
-
Reduced air output after the car has been driven for any considerable length of time
with the air conditioning switched on.
-
A white mist emerges from the ventilation grilles.
Cause:
When the evaporator is at a temperature of approx. 2
°
C, it is switched off via the
compressor. Under certain operating conditions, however, it is possible that the evaporator
may ice up.
Affected
vehicles:
E36 with IHKR
Period of manufacture: from the start of series production through to week
23/94 approximately.
Remedy:
In the event of this complaint arising, the evaporator adapter given below should be fitted
on the evaporator sensor. The resistor integrated into the evaporator adapter ensures that
the compressor switches the evaporator off once it reaches a temperature of approx. 5
°
C instead of when it reaches approx. 2
°
C as before. This prevents ice from forming on
the evaporator.
It is essential that the fitting of the evaporator adapter is recorded by affixing the relevant
label (see Parts below) to the IHKR control unit.
Important:
If the IHKR control unit is replaced at a later date with a control unit manufactured
during week 24/94 or later after an evaporator adapter has been installed, it is
imperative the evaporator adapter be removed again. Otherwise the cooling
performance will be greatly impaired.
Procedure:
Check the date of manufacture of the IHKR control unit:
The date of manufacture can be read out using the DIS function "Read identification".
It is not permitted to fit an evaporator adapter in conjunction with IHKR control units
manufactured during week 24/94 or later because here the resistor has already been
integrated into the control unit.
In the case of IHKR control units manufactured up to and including week
23/94, the evaporator adapter should be fitted:
Disconnect the wiring harness for the air conditioning at the evaporator sensor.
Plug in the evaporator adapter (1) between the air conditioning wiring harness and the
evaporator sensor.
Fasten the adapter in place on the wiring harness using a tie-wrap (2). Make sure that none
of the wires are kinked in any way during this process.
Affix the label enclosed in the parts kit to the IHKR control unit (in the centre console) - so
that it is easily visible.
