Gear recognition potentiometer plug connector

E36 / M3 with SMG

Situation: 

1. 

Due to environmental influences such as humidity or temperature fluctuations, contact
resistance can build up at the plug connector between the gear recognition
potentiometer and the wiring harness.

2. 

Apart from this, the 25-ampère fuse for the SMG hydraulic pump may fail in isolated
cases while the hydraulic pump is being started up from cold.

Effect: 

Re: 1.

-

Not possible to engage a gear with the engine running and the vehicle stationary.

-

Selector lever position "0" cannot be selected when the engine is switched off, making
it impossible to start the engine.

-

SMG fault "E3" (instrument cluster) can occur, i.e. the vehicle will only drive in 3rd gear
and the engine can no longer be started after being switched off.

Gear change no longer possible.

Affected
vehicles:

E36/M3 with sequential M-transmission (SMG) 
Manufacturing period: as per list of vehicle identification numbers 
(introduction of SMG in series production until 04/1998)

Action: 

Re: 1.

Disconnect gear recognition potentiometer connector and recrimp. A modified plug
connector (with gold contacts) was introduced into series production on 8 April 1998.

Important:

Vehicles with plug connectors which have been soldered, crimped or reworked in
any other way must be reworked again with the approved repair kit in accordance
with the work instructions.

Re: 2.

Replace the 25-ampère hydraulic pump fuse with a 30-ampère fuse. 
The 30-ampère fuse has been fitted in series production since 1 April 1998.
