Ignition lock spins freely
E31, E36, E38, E39
Situation:
Field observations have shown a degree of diagnostic unreliability with regard to the
ignition lock and its components. The result is that various components are often renewed
without reason, where only one single component is the source of the problem.
For example, a regular problem is that the lock cylinder spins freely and the ignition lock is
renewed complete with lock cylinder.
In future, the warranty centre will reject ignition locks which are submitted with the lock
cylinder installed as this cannot be removed without the key and thus cannot be tested.
Affected
vehicles:
E31, E36, E38, E39
Action:
In case of complaint, only the lock cylinder is to be renewed.
Procedure:
Confirm customer complaint (ignition lock spins freely with correct or incorrect key; the
vehicle can however still be started with the correct key, provided this is deliberately
inserted to the stop in the lock cylinder).
If the above complaint applies, the lock cylinder should be renewed and any fractures
removed.
Please refer to repair instructions 32 32 050.
Note:
The cause is a fractured rib in the lock cylinder. This rib has the function of a rated
breaking point. It shears off if excessive force is used. This triggers the lock cylinder's
freewheel function, making theft of the vehicle more difficult.
