Poor warming-up characteristics
E36 / S54 / M coupé, M roadster
Complaint:
Engine stalls or surges during the first 20 - 30 seconds after a cold start.
Cause:
If the engine is repeatedly started without reaching normal operating temperatures, the
initial filling fuel can cause the spark plugs to "soot".
Affected
vehicles:
E36/7 S54
Manufacturing period: from the start of series production up to May 2001
Procedure:

Add at least 25 litres of commercially available fuel to the tank.

Start the vehicle and allow the engine to warm up to its normal operating temperature
(or drive the vehicle until the engine is warm).

If the engine misfires or surges heavily (speed variations in the region of +/- 200 rpm)
after it has been started at its normal operating temperature, replace the spark plugs.

In case of customer complaint, replace the spark plugs.
