Vulcanisation Peeling
Wheel Suspension Joint
E36
Complaint:
On vehicles manufactured after 10/93, the wheel suspension joints on the front axle are
being replaced even though there is no vulcanisation peeling.
Cause:
Due to the manufacturing process used, it may come about that layers of rubber hang down
from the underside of the wheel suspension joint (like layers of skin); they look very similar
to vulcanisation peeling in its primary stage.
See SI 31 01 94 (817)
Procedure:
No cases of vulcanisation peeling on the wheel suspension joints have been substantiated
for joints manufactured after 10/93. Before you disassemble the wheel suspension joints,
check the date of manufacture stamped into the underside of the bracket. You will probably
have to use a wire brush to brush off the dirt covering it.

There is no technical justification for replacing wheel suspension joints manufactured after
10/93 because of apparent vulcanisation peeling. Since there is no actual technical defect,
