Software errors in navigation system
E39, E46, E38 with option 606/609
Complaint:
The following software errors may occur intermittently or permanently in the navigation
system or when operating functions by means of the on-board monitor or the radio
navigation control panel:
1.
The screen remains dark or only shows the status bar after the vehicle start.
2.
The screen intermittently darkens during a journey and the system reboots.
3.
On-board computer data missing from the on-board monitor display.
4.
On-board computer data not updated during a journey
(radio navigation system only).
5.
A route intermittently runs in a loop.
6.
Route guidance intermittently remains active following a new start after "Destination
reached".
7.
The TMC symbol intermittently remains black in the status bar.
8.
The target direction arrow (TDA) is shown in a digitalised area.
9.
If an incoming call without caller identifier is received, an incorrect number is shown on
the display (radio navigation system only).
None of the complaints described above are valid reasons for exchanging the navigation
computer.
Software errors that have already been able to be eliminated in an earlier version of the
operating software are not mentioned in this Service Information bulletin. You can find a list

Cause:
Software errors in the operating system for the graphics component of the navigation
computer or for the navigation computer itself (see enclosure).
Fault number 9 only occurs since the introduction of operating
software V12 (since July 1999).
Affected
vehicles:
E38, E39, E46 with navigation system (option 609) and
E46 with radio navigation system (option 606)
Manufacturing period: from the start of series production
Procedure:
Compare the customer complaints with the descriptions in the enclosure and verify.
If it is possible to remedy the error in the navigation system variant affected by updating the
operating software, this must be done.
The current version of the operating system is available from
December 1999.
