Permanently installed Motorola telephone and Motorola V3690 mobile phone: Mute
intermittently remains active after receiving an SMS
E38, E39, E46, E53 with GSM car phone (option 629); complete basic fittings for
Motorola V3690 mobile phone (option 632)
Complaint:
If one or more SMS messages are received after the permanently installed Motorola
telephone or the Motorola V3690 mobile phone is switched on, the radio mute (telephone
mute) intermittently remains active so that there is no audio sound.
This complaint only occurs if the network provider on the server transmits a number of
SMS messages in quick succession after detecting that the telephone has been switched
on. In Germany, this only occurs in the Deutsche Telekom D1 network.
Cause:
Software error in the handset of the permanently installed Motorola telephone or in the
Motorola V3690 mobile phone.
Affected
vehicles:
E38, E39, E46, E53 with GSM car phone (option 629) or basic equipment for installation of
mobile phone (option 640) and retrofit option 629.
Manufacturing period:
E38, E39: September 1998 to October 2000
E53: September 1998 to November 2000
E46: September 1998 to March 2001
E38, E39, E46, E53 with complete basic fittings for Motorola mobile phone V3690 (option
632); basic equipment for installation of mobile phone (option 640) and retrofit
option 632.
Manufacturing period:
E38, E39, E46, E53: June 2000 to March 2001
Procedure:
In case of customer complaint, perform the following actions:
Permanently installed Motorola telephone
With the permanently installed Motorola telephone, press the C button on the handset
before loading SMS messages, after which the audio system will operate in the customary
manner.
Motorola V3690 mobile telephone
1.
Switch on the mobile phone:

If the text message "BMW" does not appear in the startup display, the mobile
phone has been purchased on the open market. On mobile phones which have
been purchased on the open market, please note and if necessary work off SI 84
03 00 (598) "Motorola V3690 mobile phone from open market".

If the text message "BMW" appears in the startup display, the mobile phone has
been purchased through the BMW parts sales department. Please continue with
item 2.

Switch off the mobile phone. Open the battery tray and remove the battery. The BMW
part number is printed on the label on the back of the unit (see Fig. 1).
