Motorola permanently installed telephone: MFL inoperable

E38, E39, E46, E53 with GSM car phone (option 629);

Complaint:

Calls on the Motorola permanently installed telephone can neither be received nor ended
using the multi-function steering wheel (MFL).

Cause:

Software error in interface.

Affected
vehicles:

E38, E39, E46, E53 with GSM car phone (option 629) or basic equipment for installation of
mobile phone (option 640) and retrofit option 629.
Manufacturing period:
E38, E39, E53: May 1999 until October 2000 (discontinuation of option 629)
E46: May 1999 until February 2001.

Procedure:

In case of customer complaint, check the interface and replace if necessary:

1. 

Remove the interface.

Please refer to Repair Instructions "Removing and installing / replacing interface for
GSM car phone",

Repair Instructions 84 11 530.

2. 

Check the hardware and software status of the interface. This is printed on the label
on the interface (please refer to Fig. 1).

If the hardware and software status is "H/S: 06/05", "H/S: 08/06", "H/S: 08/09", "H/S:
09/11", "H/S: 10/12", "H/S: 10/13", "H/S: 10/14", "H/S: 10/15" or "H/S: 11/14":

Replace the interface.

If a hardware and software status other than those stated above is installed:

The interface is OK. No further actions are necessary.
