telephone menu. The emergency call button is connected to the Telematic Control Unit (TCU). Pressing the
emergency call button will trigger a manual emergency call.
System functions
The system functions for making a phone call with the Telematic Control Unit (TCU) and the paired Bluetooth
handset are based on wireless data transmission using the Bluetooth radio standard.
Important: Please comply with local legal approvals for Bluetooth technology.
Bluetooth technology is not approved for use in all countries If approval has not been granted, the Bluetooth
connection between the Bluetooth handset and the Telematic Control Unit (TCU) must be temporarily
disabled for as long as you are in that country.
Main functions of the Telematic Control Unit (TCU) for the telephone
The TCU enables the following main functions in the basic variants:

Hands-free mode

Privacy mode

Short Message Service (SMS text messaging)
Hands-free mode
Important: Whilst driving, the driver should make calls in hands-free mode only.
It is legally permissible for the driver to make a call in hands-free mode using the hands-free microphone and
loudspeakers in the vehicle while he is driving.
Hands-free mode is automatically activated when a call is accepted using the transmit/receive button on the
multi-function steering wheel. If the radio is switched off during call acceptance, the audio system for the voice
output will be switched on automatically. The call is then conducted in full duplex digital transmission using the
hands-free microphone and the loudspeakers in the vehicle. The transmission quality is improved by digitising
the analogue voice signals. The audibility of the voice signals is better.
Privacy mode
Important: The driver should not make calls in privacy mode whilst driving.
Only passengers are permitted to make calls using the Bluetooth handset in privacy mode during a journey.
In privacy mode, the call is conducted using the Bluetooth handset. It is more difficult for other people to hear the
conversation when the Bluetooth handset is used. When privacy mode is activated, hands-free mode is
deactivated.
Short Message Service (SMS text messaging)
In Short Message Service (SMS text messaging), an incoming text message will appear on the display of the
Bluetooth handset, the radio's multi-information display (MID) or the central information display (CID).
However, a text message (SMS) can only be written and sent using the Bluetooth handset.
Telematics
The scope of use of telematics depends on the special equipment installed.
In vehicles with the EURO national version, the option 638 " Car phone Professional" is only available in
combination with option 609 "Navigation system Professional".
If option 612 "BMW Assist" is installed, the range of possible uses is expanded. If this special equipment is
installed, the following telematics services can be used:
