In automatic mode, the gearshifts are automatically controlled according to characteristic curves and are
adapted to the driving situation.

Compared to the sequential manual transmission previously used in the E46 (C-SMG), which was based on the 5-
speed manual transmission (C-transmission), the following modifications have been made on the new SMG:

The SMG GS6S37BZ (H-SMG) is based on the 6-speed manual transmission GS6-37BZ
(H-transmission).

The installation location of the hydraulic components and sensors on the transmission housing have been
changed.
-
Flexible lines with quick-release fasteners are used for the high pressure lines from the hydraulic unit.

The electromechanical reversing-light switch has been eliminated and replaced by a relay in the electronics box.

Forced upshift and the kickdown downshift are eliminated in manual mode. Exception: when the acceleration
assistant is used (race-start function), forced upshift is retained to support the driver.

Dynamic Driving Control FDC can be activated in automatic mode (SPORT button).
The principal benefits of the SMG compared to a conventional manual transmission:

No clutch pedal as clutch actions run automatically

Selection of 3 operating modes:

Sequential, manual gearshift via gear lever and gearshift paddles
•
Dynamic Driving Control (FDC) via SPORT button: a more sporty driving style through intervention in the
engine and transmission control systems (in manual mode and in cruise mode = automatic mode)
•
Cruise mode = Automatic mode

Short and precise gearshifts, no incorrect gearshifts possible
(gear change in approx. 0.15 seconds)

Safety and comfort: because the gearshift paddles are on the steering wheel, you can keep your hands on the
steering wheel when you change gear.

Brief description of components
The SMG system comprises the following components:

Gear lever with mounting block and gear lever trim
The gear lever allow gears to be changed sequentially by brief pressing. The gear lever has 6 positions:
3 spring-loaded detent positions for reverse gear "R", neutral "N" and manual mode (symbol "
-" between
neutral and cruise mode) plus 3 non-detent positions that are only briefly engaged when pressed ("+", "-", "C"
(cruise mode = automatic mode)). 7 Hall sensors are installed in the mounting block to recognise the position
of the gear lever. The gear lever lock (shift-lock) is also installed in the mounting block.
The gear lever trim has an illuminated gear lever position indicator and the SPORT button for activating Dynamic
Driving Control FDC. [more ...]

Steering wheel with gearshift paddles
The steering wheel with gearshift paddles allows manual gear changes without the driver having to take his
hands from the steering wheel. When one or both of the gearshift paddles is pulled, the transmission will shift
