Rear window opens unexpectedly
E46 Touring
Complaints:
The rear window intermittently opens unexpectedly when the vehicle is stationary.
Cause:
The complaint described may be caused by the following components:
-
Rear window button with micro switch
-
Rear window with wire to rear window button
-
Suppressor filter
-
General module
Affected vehicles:
E46 Touring
Manufacturing period: from February 2000 until May 2002
Procedure:
In case of complaint, check whether the customer's complaint points to one of the causes
given and make sure that incorrect operation (e.g. inadvertent operation of the remote
control) can be ruled out.
If incorrect operation on the part of the customer can be ruled out, proceed as follows:
1.
Disconnect the rear window wire from connector X10289 under the roof spoiler.
2.
Measure the resistance between the wire leading to the rear window and the earth
strap on the tailgate hinge.
This measurement, like the measurements for the button resistances in case 1 and
case 2, can as a rule only be performed using an ohmmeter or digital multimeter.
On no account may continuity tests be conducted using a bulb load!
Case 1:
Resistance less than 1 mega-ohm:
Disconnect the rear window button (without pressing the button). Measure the resistance
again.
1a) If the resistance value is then greater than 1 mega-ohm, replace the rear window
button.
1b) If the resistance value is then less than 1 mega-ohm, replace the rear window and
the general module.
Case 2:
Resistance greater than 1 mega-ohm:
Press the rear window button and measure the resistance.
2a) If the resistance is greater than 100 ohms while the switch is pressed, replace the
rear window button.
2b) If the resistance value is less than 100 ohms while the switch is pressed, release the
rear window button and measure the resistance again.
If the resistance value is then less than 1 mega-ohm while the button is not pressed,
replace the rear window button.
